The BC government has released the number of nominees for physicians in the Provincial Nominee Class for the period 1 Jan 2017 to 30 Jun 2018 (see below):

49 Specialist Physicians
54 General Practitioners
49 Registered Nurses
35 Licensed Practical nurses

ONTARIO IMMIGRATION NEWS

The Ontario Government has released the following statistics for its immigration streams for 2017.

Economic News

OIL PRICE

Due to several factors (including pipeline shortage) Canadian oil is being supplied at a massive discount of CAD 46 per barrel. It was reported in the National Post on 29 October 2018 that Canada is losing CAD 100 million a day as a result of this low oil price. Canadian oil companies are trying to export oil via railway. They are able to move 200 000 barrels a day via rail, but it is not enough to get all the oil to the refineries.

PROVINCIAL DEBT

It was mentioned in the National Post of 28 September 2018 that our Parliamentary Budget Officer signaled that provincial and federal debt levels are too high. He explained that in 20 years from now some provinces would not be able to pay their debt, if the current increases in debt continues. The current debt levels are not sustainable. At the current growth of debt, in 25 years New Brunswick’s debt will balloon from the current 36 % of GDP to 115 % of GDP. In the same period, Manitoba will increase from 37b % to 105 % and Newfoundland from 32 % to 76 % of GDP. Increasingly articles appear about concerning debt levels on a provincial and Federal level. Canada was in a similar boat in the 1990’s and The Minister of Finance, Mr. Paul Martin, pulled the belt in and reigned in the debt.

It would not be surprising if our federal government starts austerity measures beginning in 2020. Canada has a federal election in Oct 2019 and the expectation by many is that the Liberal Trudeau government will lose the election and the conservatives will take over. Not only will the new government control the deficit, but it will also change the current skilled federal immigration system. The prediction is that the current system of immigration where anyone can apply if they have enough points will be abolished.

LNG (Liquid Natural Gas) PROJECTS

Shell Canada announced a CAD 40 billion LNG project in Kitimat (a coastal town in North West BC). This would be one of the biggest infrastructure developments in many decades.

Two smaller LNG projects are also being discussed. The first one is the Goldboro LNG project in Nova Scotia of CAD 10 billion and the second is a smaller Woodfibre LNG project just North of Vancouver in Howe Sound.

If these projects are started, it might lead to opportunities for more immigrants after the pool of unemployed Canadians have been depleted.

Military News

The Canadian Navy has announced that it will build 15 new warships at a cost of CAD 60 billion in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with a Type 26 Frigate design from BAE systems in the United Kingdom. One of the bidders for the tender is Lockheed Martin Canada which leads a consortium that includes the Irving Shipyard in Halifax. It seems as if Lockheed Martin- Irving-BAE Systems is expected to win the bid to manufacture the 15 warships.

The federal government leased a used ship (Container Vessel MV Asterix) and awarded a CAD 688 million sole source contract to the Davy Shipyard in Montreal to convert the vessel to a logistics vessel. When the Liberal Trudeau government won the election, they decided to cancel the project. About a dozen people knew about the decision, but the Royal Canadian Mountain Police (RCMP) decided to charge the Chief of the Navy for leaking “secret” cabinet documents to the media. Vice Admiral Norman is being represented by top criminal lawyer Marie Henein, whom was born in Egypt and emigrated to Canada when she was young. It now seems as if the RCMP’s evidence is weak. If Admiral Norman is found not guilty, the Federal Government would have to pay millions to Admiral Norman for ruining his career.
